Ardahan was one of the cities experiencing the armed conflict tension on 15 July. Treacherous putschists went out on the streets, but the state and nation collaborated and defeated them. 25th Border Brigade Commander and Ardahan Garrison Commander Brigadier General Erdem Kargın called the Ardahan Governor and demanded "surrender".
However, Ardahan Governor İbrahim Özefe did not surrender saying "You are on the wrong way, pull the troops".
While a blackout was applied in Ardahan Provincial Security Directorate and Governorate for security purposes, putschists seizing military vehicles landed in the city center. After the call of President Erdoğan, people of Ardahan went to streets and thus the coup attempt was unsuccessful.
Putschists who were in the city center for about 40 minutes had to return to the barracks. While military barracks were closed with vehicles belonging to the municipality and special government, people of Ardahan held democracy watch for days.
25 ranking soldiers were arrested including 25th Border Brigade Commander and Ardahan Garrison Commander former Brigadier General Erdem Kargın who was the one to be appointed as so-called "Ardahan-Artvin region martial law commander" if the coup attempt was to be achieved.
