Mersin residents narrowly escaped a disaster

On the night of July 15, a great disaster was narrowly avoided in Mersin. It was found out that Commodore Nejat Atilla Demirhan who was one of the coup plotters and Commander of Mediterranean Region and Garrison Command at that time, had ordered to put the governor under custody. Coup plotter commander stopped all operations in International Port Management and prohibited exit and entrance of ships and vehicles by his order.

While the meeting regarding the coup attempt was going on, 3rd Degree Police Chief Hasan Basri Dağdelen who was cooperation with coup plotters went into the office with a radio on his hand and declared his loyalty as saying “I have received an e-mail ordering me to enter into your service and I am at your service”.

The coup plotter commander announced via radio that Turkish Armed Forces seized power and he was the commander of martial law. He gave orders to take the governor Özdemir Çakacak and borough masters into custody.

Following the developments, a crises desk was established in Provincial Police Department under the presidency of Governor Özdemir Çakacak around 00.30. Chief Public Prosecutor Mustafa Yıldırım issued custody warrant for Commodore Nejat Atilla Demirhan who participated in coup attempt.

Commodore Nejat Atilla Demirhan, Commander of Mediterranean Region and Garrison Command, resisted for 4 hours not to surrender. He surrendered after having a shave when 200 policemen was preparing for an operation. Coup plotter Commodore was one of the first commanders arrested.
